The Beginning: Abolishing High Temperature Evils
It all began in the 1840s when Dr. John Gorrie of Florida started developing a cooling system for hospitals and cities because he believed high temperature had evil within it. He believed that cooling people would help avoid rampant diseases during that time.
The first cooling idea he had involved the costly shipment of ice from frozen lakes in North America. It was financially impossible, so he then decided to create an artificial way instead. He designed a machine that created ice on the spot using a horse powered compressor. It was granted for a patent in 1851, but he wasn’t able to bring his invention to the public due to the death of his financial backer.
Although he was unsuccessful in incorporating the artificial cooling system into homes, it went through a long series of developments that resulted in the technology we have today.
The Development: From Publishing to the Public
Gorrie’s idea wasn’t put under the spotlight until an engineer named Willis Carrier was tasked to solve a humidity problem for the Sackett-Wilhelms Publishing Company.
This humidity issue caused their magazine pages to wrinkle, so they wanted to regulate the air in their building. This led Willis Carrier to invent the first modern electrical air conditioning unit with the use of cooling coils that could serve as a humidifier and dehumidifier.
Later on, Carrier realized his invention could be used in other industries and he formed the Carrier Engineering Corporation to develop his product.
