Your home’s HVAC is a complex system. If something goes wrong with it, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up spending a lot of money just to get it fixed by an air conditioning company. However, some of the most expensive repairs are actually avoidable if you know how to take good care of your unit. Here are four of the biggest HVAC fixes and how they can be avoided.
Refrigerant leaks. The HVAC system’s refrigerant is essential in drawing heat from the air it’s regulating. Damage to the condenser pipes can cause this refrigerant to leak, rendering the entire system useless. Fixing the pipes and replacing the refrigerant can cost several hundred dollars at the least. However, this can be avoided by having the unit’s pipes checked at least twice a year for signs of damage so they can be safely repaired without the risk of leaking refrigerant.
Compressor issues. Experts say that compressor issues are among the worst to fix, with severe cases almost always requiring the purchase of a new unit. This problem is caused by unnecessary pressure within a dirt-blocked condensation coil. Fortunately, AC and furnace companies say that this issue can easily be avoided by having a technician de-clog the pipes. The technician can also check the compressor itself to see if there are any parts that need replaced.
Damaged fan. The outdoor unit’s fan is designed to keep it cool by blowing air through the fins. A broken fan is irreparable, and will always warrant an (expensive) replacement. If you want to avoid damage to the fan, you have to keep the outdoor unit safe by keeping the area around it clear of plants and other things that could get snagged by a spinning fan.
Damaged louver. The motorized louver allows the indoor component of your HVAC system to properly disperse the regulated air across a room. However, mishandling the indoor unit by trying to tilt the louvers by hand can damage the mechanism, preventing it from moving. AC and electric panel companies say that this repair can easily be avoided simply by keeping your hands off the louver and controlling it exclusively via remote control.
