While myths are often harmless and easily debunked, some persist and widely believed by some people. In terms of indoor air quality, such myths and misconceptions can impact someone’s quality of living, perhaps even affect their health over the long term. In today’s post, All Seasons Inc. debunks some of these persistent myths.
“Indoor Air Is Cleaner Than Outdoor Air”
It’s easy to assume that indoor air is cleaner just because it’s filtered, and because outdoor air isn’t exactly the cleanest, particularly in urban areas. However, that is not the case: according to the US EPA, the air in an average home can be twice more polluted. Since most of today’s homes are essentially sealed environments, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other indoor air pollutants tend to accumulate within. Opening the windows for at least 15 minutes a day can help keep indoor air pollutant levels to a minimum.
“Air Fresheners Improve Indoor Air Quality”
Air fresheners are everywhere. There’s one in your car right now, perhaps a can or two in your cupboard. While they do come in handy in the presence of bad odors, they only mask odors. They do not eliminate indoor air pollutants, and therefore do not improve upon your home’s indoor air quality. If anything, it’s the opposite: aerosolized products typically contain VOCs that linger indoors, contributing to indoor air pollutants. The best way to get rid of odors is also the simplest — just open your windows.
“Mold Only Grows in Humid Climates”
This is likely a misinterpretation of the fact that mold does thrive in humid areas. However, humidity is present everywhere, particularly in enclosures where there’s little to no ventilation such as basements and the gaps within the walls. Mold spores are also present everywhere, which means it is entirely possible for mold to grow in any home. Regular home inspections by way of preventative maintenance can help reduce the risks of mold growing sight unseen.
